Over two dozen Olympic medal winners, trainers and additional world-class competitors have signed a statement demanding a stop to the execution of a boxing titleholder and trainer, who is facing execution in the nation.

Increasing Global Anger

Amidst rising worldwide anger over the country's increasing application of capital punishment as a instrument of repression, the forcefully phrased letter denounces the government's decision to uphold the execution order of Mohammad Javad Vafaei Sani.

The boxer, 30, from Mashhad in the northeastern region, was detained for taking part in national uprisings in 2019 and indicted of backing an opposition group. He has endured five years in incarceration, where he has been tortured and held in isolation.

“Sport is meant to encourage optimism, unity, and fortitude,” the signatories stated. “The capital punishment of a champion for his opinions is a blatant attack on these principles and a caution to any competitor who ventures to speak out.

Record of Executing Competitors

The letter said that the boxer's circumstances was part of a pattern and emphasized the country's history of putting to death sports champions for their beliefs, such as a national team leader, skipper of the football side, and a volleyball captain, skipper of the female volleyball side. In 2020, Navid Afkari, a 27-year-old Iranian wrestling champion, was also executed.

Further supporters to the statement comprise a yachting pioneer, who skippered the first all-female crew in a international sailing event and was the pioneering lady to be awarded a prestigious sailing award; the ex- captain of the Australian football team a sports advocate; and a footballer, who was in the national team for the international competition.

Detention and Unfair Trial

Vafaei Sani was detained in the spring of 2020. The allegations against him included “promoting decay on Earth through incendiarism and destruction of state assets”. His sentence has been reversed multiple times but on the fourth of October it was confirmed on the third occasion. His court case was condemned as “deeply biased” by advocates and groups.

Call to United Nations

The call to halt the boxer's death sentence is subsequent to a 2023 appeal to the United Nations official for freedoms, endorsed by more than 100 human rights experts and entities, demanding intervention to stop the sports figure's capital punishment.

Capital Punishment Escalation
