A fatal railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the pace and handling of the country's key government projects.
The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route developed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We are going to meticulously determine the reasons behind this accident,” affirmed the head of state.
The official confirmed that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The leader stated plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those involved.
Key Undertaking of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the former leader, whose presidency ended the previous year. This rail line was intimately linked to his government's economic vision for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to revitalize the economy of a historically less developed part of the country.
Building Management and Safety Concerns
The development of both railway systems was managed by the army, marking a notable growth of its role in national works. They were built at an rapid pace, beating predictions to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently fueled persistent questions over operational security.

Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the disaster, the head of a key rival party urged an urgent pause in the development and management of all comparable projects.
This pause was proposed until the completion of a comprehensive technical review. The party emphasized that the situation "demands swift accountability."
In response, the president insisted that the train had been operating in complete accordance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and operation of these vital undertakings.
